Amazon Prime is $72, today only!

Amazon Prime $72

I just found out about an awesome discount on Amazon Prime, effective today (24 January) only! To celebrate Amazon’s series Transparent winning two Golden Globes they’ve discounted the price of an Amazon Prime subscription to $72 from the usual $99. This $27 discount is a great deal for an incredible service.

I usually sign up for free trials of Prime when I can (especially around Christmas), however this marks the first time I’ve committed to an entire year of the service. The free two day shipping is awesome (and addictive!) but you also get access to Amazon’s video and music streaming services, which are pretty cool as well.

Head over to Amazon to take advantage of this discount while it lasts!

Girls Season 2

girls season 2 blu ray

I haven’t finished the first season yet (have three episodes left I believe), but I found a pretty decent deal on Season two on Blu Ray. It was $19.99 on Amazon and I had $20 in cash back credit on my credit card so I got it free! As I mentioned in the last post, I subscribe to HBO and do have access to all the seasons of Girls on demand, however I’ve been pushing the limits on my bandwidth cap lately so I decided I should watch the second season on Blu Ray.

I haven’t bought a DVD or Blu Ray in years as I prefer to either download or stream everything I watch using iTunes or Xbox Video, but again I need to get my bandwidth use under control. Fortunately the Blu Ray pack came with an HBO Select code redeemable on the service of your choice. I redeemed it on iTunes (you also get a VUDU version) so it’ll be nice to be able to just go back and stream any episodes I wish to watch again later (I hate having to dig out DVDs, which is another reason I pretty much abandoned physical media).

Looking forward to finishing up season one and digging into the second season. Love the show and hope to catch up soon!

Wanting to get back into HBO’s Girls

Girls_HBO_Poster

Last year I started watching the HBO series, Girls and thoroughly enjoyed it after binge watching the first four episodes. Then, for whatever reason, I drifted away and never finished catching up on the show. Now that the fourth season has started, and Lena Dunham has been in the news, on talk shows and featured in magazines a lot lately, I’ve had a desire to get back into the show.

I’ve noticed a lot of hate being spewed on the internet lately about Dunham, and I don’t quite get it. I think part of it is fueled by this ‘anti feminist’ fad that’s cropped up on the web lately, and it’s just not cool. I know some people find some of her admissions featured in her memoir (Not That Kind of Girl) “sick” and offensive, yet I still think she’s not only an interesting and unique person but her character is also enjoyable to watch on the show.

Now here’s my dilemma. I have HBO and can watch Girls on demand, yet I’ve managed to exceed my internet provider’s sad 300gb data cap for the last three months and keep getting notices that my rates are going to be increased if I go over one more time (what a joke). In an age when physical media just seems silly to me (I download all of my Xbox One, 3DS and PC games, and stream all my movies) I’m facing a hurdle to enjoying the content I pay for. I could buy the seasons of Girls on Blu Ray (season one is just $10 on Amazon), but I already pay for HBO and have access to the first three seasons already. So do I sacrifice Netflix watching? Forgo downloading a game this month? What a first world problem to have right now…

Anywho, I’m probably going to download the rest of season one on demand and then see where I sit with the bandwidth cap before I start season two. At any rate I’m excited to get back into the show! I’m also pretty sure I’m going to pick up her memoir in the iBooks store, because I’m quite intrigued by her and want to know more.

Fox News removed from Dish Network

If DISH Network is your TV provider, you may have noticed that Fox News and the Fox Business Network no longer appear in your channel lineup. Just a few weeks after CNN, Cartoon Network and other channels returned to the air after their dispute, Fox has been pulled due to its own contract dispute.

Luckily this is only affecting the Fox News channels and not FX or FXX which I tend to watch every now and then. Personally I wouldn’t miss Fox News if it never came back, but I’m sure it’ll be back in a matter of weeks for those who are missing it. It’s unfortunate when these things happen, but they always seem to resolve themselves before too long (though CNN was gone for quite awhile).

Interesting Xbox One stats and HBO Go now available

Yesterday I got an e-mail from Microsoft celebrating one year of the Xbox One and it included some pretty interesting stats about my year. It pointed out that I’m in the top 5% of Xbox One gamers with 6650 gamerscore earned on the Xbox One. I’ve also spent 371 hours gaming on Xbox Live on the Xbox One which places me in the top 25% of gamers. It’s kind of cool to learn about these stats and see where you fit in with the rest of the Xbox One community.

If you’re interested in seeing some more stats you can check out rewards.xbox.com/myrewards and see what you’ve done over the last 30 days.

In other Xbox news, the long awaited HBO GO app has finally arrived on the Xbox One. I’m glad to have the app because the interface is nicer looking and easier to use than my Dish On Demand interface.

Where’s my CNN? (Dish Network loses CNN and others)

CNN Dish network

Every morning I wake up and tune to CNN to get a quick look at what’s going on in the world. Sure CNN isn’t the best quality news, and I quickly tire of it and head to The New York Times to get a better look at the news, it’s easy to tune to first thing in the morning.

Today, however, I was met with a message saying that “Turner Networks has removed this channel from your lineup” because of a contract dispute. Other channels missing include Headline News (HLN), Cartoon Network, truTV, TCM, Adult Swim, Boomerang and CNN en Espanol.

CNN DISH network

I hate how this always seems to happens, and don’t understand why these things can’t get settled without all the finger pointing and putting the customers in the middle of the fight. I don’t doubt the channels will return in a timely manner, I just feel like it’s a childish move.

So if you were looking for CNN this morning on DISH Network I recommend Aljazeera America as an alternate. I feel like they offer the least sensational presentation, and they’re more focused on investigating the news rather than trying to capture viewers.

FOX and DISH Anywhere: Why I’m no longer watching FOX

One of the main reasons I subscribed to DISH Network was because of the DISH Anywhere feature with the Hopper. DISH Anywhere allows you to tune into live TV from anywhere on any device with an internet connection. The Hopper has Slingbox technology built in, so basically you can watch TV through your receiver over the internet.

Now that broadcast companies have succeeded in taking down a brilliant new technology with Aereo, FOX is already going after Dish Network in an attempt to put a stop to DISH Anywhere.

As a member of the military who uses DISH Anywhere to watch live and recorded TV anywhere in the world, I’m not too happy with Fox’s decision. I pay for DISH, and DISH pays to rebroadcast network television, how I consume those broadcasts is none of Fox’s business. The fact that they are so against technology making TV consumption better (especially for those often away from home) has driven me to the decision to no longer watch any Fox broadcasting.

I sincerely hope DISH fights Fox on this (which I believe they will) and I seriously hope another great technology is not killed by the hands of greedy executives who do not care for their consumers.

Can you subscribe to Netflix with a Visa gift card?

Yes, in fact you can.

If you for whatever reason wanted to subscribe to Netflix using a Visa Vanilla Prepaid gift card, it is in fact possible. I had a hard time finding a definite answer to the question while searching Google, so I decided to answer it here, once and for all. You can, indeed use a Visa Vanilla gift card to pay for a Netflix subscription.

I decided to try it out since I’m away from home and happened to pull out cash to use while on “vacation”. I purchased a $25 Visa Vanilla gift card, went to the website listed on the back of the card and registered the card with a zip code. This is important, as these cards tend not to work for online payments unless you register them first.

After that I entered the card information into my Netflix account and was able to restart my membership without any issue. Many answers on various websites including Yahoo Answers have stated that this will not work, but I’m here to confirm that it does work and it’s essentially the only way to pay for Netflix using “cash” instead of a debit or credit card.

Just thought I’d clear that up.

Can you watch new episodes of RAW on WWE Network?

Not exactly. Before signing up for WWE Network this weekend I was trying to find the answer to this question and it wasn’t easy. I browsed through a couple pages of Google result pages and didn’t find an answer to the specific question above so I wanted to answer it here for anyone else wondering the same thing.

If you’re looking to watch episodes of RAW anytime after they air your best bet is still a Hulu Plus subscription. This is because the WWE Network delays episodes of RAW and Smackdown for about three months. For example as of today the most current episode of Smackdown you can watch is the January 23, 2014 episode. As for RAW, the most current episode is the January 19, 2014 episode.

You can, however, watch the most current PPV (which until later tonight is February’s Elimination Chamber), as well as any past PPV and of course any live PPV starting with Wrestlemania XXX tonight.

I hope this clears up any confusion anyone might have. Maybe I just missed the information, but I couldn’t find a clear answer through Google myself.
