New this week: The Wolf Among Us

Episode 1 of Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us arrived this past week for PC / Mac and XBLA, and will arrive on Tuesday on PSN. The gameplay will likely be familiar for anyone who played Telltale’s The Walking Dead which was widely considered to be one of the best games released last year and the one that popularized the episodic release game type. I honestly haven’t seen or read a lot about The Wolf Among Us, but I picked up the first episode on Xbox because of how much I loved The Walking Dead.

I have not finished episode 5 of The Walking Dead yet (or 400 Days for that matter) but I’m excited to give The Wolf Among us a try and maybe it’ll get me in the mood to finish TWD.

Have you played The Wolf Among Us? How is it? I’ll be sure to post some thoughts after I play through episode one, possibly later tonight.

Gamestop: All pre-owned PS3’s $149

To this day I’ve never had any desire to own a PS3, however once I saw the Beyond Two Souls trailer on TV that changed. I felt a sudden, almost intense urge to play that game. Now I know it’s received some mixed reviews, but I still really want to play the game. It may be simply that I love Ellen Page, but it could also be that I love adventure games. Indigo Prophecy was one of my favorite games on the original Xbox and interactive story games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead continue to be some of my favorite gameplay experiences.Screen Shot 2013-10-12 at 1.57.12 PM

Therefore I was elated when I saw that Gamestop is selling all pre-owned PS3 models at $149 from now until the 24th of October (the original model 360 is selling for $99 and the slim is selling for $119 during that period as well). Unfortunately my budget won’t allow me to pick up a PS3 until the first of November pay period. Still, I may end up purchasing a PS3 to play through Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls in the near future. I’m not really interested in anything else the PS3 has to offer. I have a Blu-Ray player but almost never use it as I stream the majority of my movies in HD, or rent HD movies on demand via DISH.

Hopefully you can take advantage of this sweet deal through Gamestop. It’s really the cheapest way to get a 120gb PS3, as the lowest I’ve seen a 60gb go for on Craigslist around here has been $135.

Day two of GTA Online: Still no luck

I still have not been able to get past the tutorial in GTA V. I’m stuck on the ‘waiting for other players’ screen again. I’ve read of a few possible workarounds, one mentioned on the Rockstar website involves deleting the title update from your hard drive and downloading it again. I’m going to try that and if that doesn’t work then I’ll just give it a rest until Rockstar gets all the bugs worked out.

UPDATE:

Ok so I deleted and redownloaded the title update and tried joining GTA Online via the ‘solo session’ option which some people have said has worked, however this time I get stuck on an infinite loading screen where before it said ‘waiting for players’ so I’ve made no progress. Looks like I’ll be waiting awhile longer to check out GTA Online.

Trying to play GTA Online

GTA Online launched today (the online counterpart to GTA V), however so far it’s been facing lots of roadblocks. Rockstar warned that the launch would be rocky, so this isn’t something unexpected. I haven’t been able to get into the actual gameplay yet, but you can view my efforts below if you want.

Returning to World of Warcraft….again…

Today I played World of Warcraft for the first time in six months. I just got a random urge to play again, so I activated my account and logged in. I hit a level cap for the first time since I started playing WoW (which I believe was somewhere around 2007 or 2008). Every year around October the weather reminds me of the time I first tried WoW. One of the things that blew me away was the experience of taking down the Headless Horseman with a bunch of other players, all while inhaling the fresh autumn air through the window and munching on candy corn between classes in my sophomore year of college.

I’ve played on and off since then, but never got too into it. It’s fun to play here and there ,but I’m not one to play the game religiously or scientifically, with a bunch of add ons and crunching numbers, reading strategy guides and determining ‘proper’ class builds. I just play to play, that’s all. I’ve never done a proper raid. I did do a few of the Cataclysm raids via Raid Finder, but it was just a bunch of random people jumping into and out of the raid, many of them disinterested.

Anyway, here’s a gameplay video of my return to WoW:

Returning to Red Dead Redemption after GTA V

Last night I played Red Dead Redemption for the first time in over a year. I was playing the mission where you escort a train and protect it from bandits and found it quite frustrating. About 5 minutes into the chase each time I would die in some sort of frustrating way and have to return to the beginning of the chase each time. 5 minutes doesn’t seem like very long, but repeating the same segment over and over makes it feel like forever. This is the same reason I gave up on GTA IV, I got stuck on the bank robbery mission and never felt like powering through it. I’m glad GTA V has the mission checkpoint system it does, hopefully it’ll make it easier to finish this game. I haven’t finished a Rockstar game since San Andreas.
