Starbucks Pick of the Week (free song): The Lumineers

If you haven’t found a good reason to install the Starbucks app on your phone, I’m about to give you a good reason to do so. Not only can you use it as a quick and easy way to pay for your daily dose of caffeine (and earn rewards doing so), you can also download a free song every week via iTunes. It’s simple, you get a message titled ‘Pick of the Week’ every week and you simply click a button which will take you to iTunes and start your free download. Recent weeks have featured songs by Dave Matthews Band, Black Prairie and Van Morrison.

This week’s pick is by far my favorite, and I have fallen in love with this band which I discovered via Starbucks. The band is The Lumineers out of Colorado, whose album (The Lumineers) debuted this past April (check it out on iTunes). The song is “Stubborn Love” which you can see in the video below. It’s an amazing song, and a great video!

Chris Pirillo’s iPhone 5 unboxing

One of my all time favorite tech geeks, Chris Pirillo, unboxed his iPhone 5 live on YouTube today and it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re interested in the iPhone. The live stream is still going, but you’ll be able to watch the recorded version soon after it ends. At the moment the video is just over an hour, so there’s plenty of detail within.

Check it out:

LootCrate

I learned about LootCrate from a Chris Pirillo video and it seems like it’s pretty cool. You can watch him unbox his lootcrate below (The unboxing starts at 28:29. Tried to link to that time but it didn’t seem to work):

For just under $20 a month they’ll send you a variety of random geeky products worth up to $40 a box according to their website. I think the idea is pretty neat and hope the service thrives. Right now they have less than 500 subscribers, and the first 500 subscribers are entered to win a Google Nexus Tablet! You can use the coupon code LOCKERGNOME (via Chris Pirillo) to receive a discount on your subscription as well. I look forward to receiving my first loot crate.

Getting back into Red vs Blue

I’ve loved the “popular web series Red vs Blue” for many years, but I’ll admit it sort of got pushed to the background over the last year or so. This past week the teaser trailer for Season 10 (which begins next month) made me realize a lot has happened that I missed. The last complete season that I watched was season 7, so there are two entire seasons that I missed.

Over the last few days I watched all of season 8 and I have to say it was quite enjoyable. It was as funny as ever but they also added a lot more action to the plot which makes it enjoyable to watch and there’s a sense of mystery in the story that compels you to keep watching episode after episode to figure out what’s going on.

I’m 6 episodes into Season 9 right now and so far it’s even better than 8. There’s a lot more action (which are fully animated and look awesome), it looks great in HD and so far there are plenty of references to the earlier seasons of RvB which make for great laughs.

For $10 every 6 months you can become a sponsor, and it’s well worth it. Sponsors get access to new episodes early, there are exclusive videos for sponsors, and sponsors can download episodes of their favorite shows (Rooster Teeth has several web series in addition to Red vs Blue). I highly recommend becoming a sponsor and helping RT continue to make great web content.

How it Should have Ended

I discovered another awesome YouTube series this weekend called ‘How it Should have Ended’ or HISHE for short. The channel, HISHEdotcom, makes animated comedic vidoes that depict how various movies and video games ‘should have’ ended. Some of my favorites include:

Harry Potter:

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Mortal Kombat

There are a ton of these videos available for your viewing pleasure. I still have yet to watch them all and am sure to discover some new favorites. I hope you’ll give these videos a shot, and I hope you enjoy the series as much as I have.

My favorite YouTube content creators

{EAV:2ec367d6c3412089}

Today I want to share with you some of my favorite YouTube content creators, or channels.

First off there’s NicePeter, best known for his Epic Rap Battles of History videos. These videos are witty, catchy and downright hilarious. The production values are high and the actors / rappers (Nice Peter and EpicLLoyd) are energetic and fun to watch. Here’s one of my favorite rap battles:

Next up is Nicepeter’s collaborator, EpicLloyd. He has fewer videos than NicePeter, but his Dis Raps for Hire series seems promising, and his rap song about chess (“Pawn”, posted on this blog previously) is entertaining and catchy as well. The following is the first Dis Raps for Hire video…The third video in the series should be on the way soon.

RoosterTeeth’s Red vs Blue series is a Halo machinima that just about everyone knows about. 9 seasons are available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube, and as an internet classic it is definitely worth checking out. It’s hard to pick an episode to represent the entire series as it’s changed and matured over the years, but a classic from season one follows:

Last, but not least, are the videos of Chris Pirillo. If you watched TechTV at all before it downgraded into G4, you might remember Chris as a host of Call 4 Help. His LockerGnome videos are often thought provoking and informative, or just downright nerdy and entertaining. He’s definitely someone you should follow if you’re into tech. He hosts lengthy live shows (one of which is embedded below) but he often chops these longer episodes up into shorter topics and posts those as well. You’ll also notice Chris is quite prolific with over 4,000 videos uploaded to YouTube.

So now that you know what I’m into, I’d like to know what you’re into. What videos do you watch on a daily, weekly, or otherwise regular basis? What content creators do you recommend?

Do the Mario

I just wanted to share one of my favorite YouTube videos with you tonight. It’s called Do the Mario and it’s a rap song by Mario, Luigi and Toad. Very catchy, love watching it over and over again. So here you go: (This is the clean version, if you so desire you can find the explicit version as well)
