Recently watched: “You Should Have Left”

Last weekend, my wife and I watched the psychological thriller, You Should Have Left. I hadn’t heard about the film at all until I happened across a trailer last week, but it looked interesting and we decided to give it a shot.

The film features Kevin Bacon as a middle-aged man (Theo) with a dark past who is married to a younger Amanda Seyfreid (Susanna). The couple plans a vacation to get away for awhile, and most of the film takes place in a remote vacation rental in Wales. While there the characters are bothered by nightmares as their relationship is tested, and more about Theo’s past is revealed.

While parts of the film are a bit creepy, I wouldn’t classify it as a horror movie. I enjoyed the setting and the story, and I think Bacon, Seyfried, and Avery Essex (who plays the couple’s daughter) all play their characters well. I also found the lighting and photography to be excellent.

Ultimately, my wife and I were left feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the end of the film. It has some great ideas, but something about it felt a little generic, or maybe rushed by the end. I thought the focus on the couple’s relationship was interesting, but explanation for why things are happening felt a little forced.

I think it was worth seeing, however I’d wait for the rental price to drop before giving it a shot. It’s a movie that I wouldn’t normally see in theaters, but felt the $20 rental was worth it just for something new to watch.

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Horribly boring

Tonight we watched The Haunting in Connecticut 2, and I have to say it is easily one of the most dull and ‘unscary’ (can’t really think of an actual word at the moment) horror movies I’ve seen in a long while. I should’ve known going in not to expect much as I’ve seen the first movie and can recall absolutely nothing about it. The movie seemed like it had promise at first, however it quickly began to bore me. None of the attempted scares hit their mark. Most of the movie is just cutting to scenes of spirits standing around doing very little haunting at all. What’s worse is the back story that gets filled in toward the end is a little too late (some of this being explained earlier, might have possibly made the location slightly creepy) and the ‘happily ever after’ ending to the movie was a major let down.

I can only hope we’ll find some better horror movies to watch as we go deeper into October. I’m really disappointed there’s not a Paranormal Activity movie this year.

I finally managed to watch Dark Skies this past weekend and I have to say it was a decently scary movie. Overall it wasn’t as scary as a Paranormal Activity movie (due mainly to a slow start and set up) but it had a few moments that were definitely on par with those movies. The conclusion was a bit strange but it worked and made for a thrilling end to a pretty decent movie. Would I recommend making a trip to the movies to see it? Not exactly, but it’d be worth a trip to the cheap theater, or a DVD rental a few months down the road.
