SmartGlass for Xbox One (I love it!)

I haven’t used SmartGlass in awhile, but I started using it again recently and I’m in love with it. It makes everything incredibly convenient and even more enjoyable. I love being able to check in on my friends, send messages or view achievements without ever having to leave my game by pushing the home button. I love being able to type using SmartGlass, and I absolutely love the companion apps. You can even view your game clips!

One of my favorite features, which I believe is rather new, is the ability to record game clips using SmartGlass. There’s a ‘Record That’ button at the bottom of the screen (if you’re using a companion app there will be three dots at the bottom of the screen. Simply tap those and a bar will pop up with the ‘Record That’ button on it).

Xbox One SmartGlass

Yesterday I started using the Battlefield 4 companion app which gives you a full screen map and shows your teammate and spotted enemy positions. It’s great for keeping up your situational awareness of the battlefield, and can help you figure out where all the action is.

I also enjoy using the Madden 15 companion app which will show previously used plays, opponent tendencies and roster information. You can also manage your depth chart using the app which is an added convenience.

I kind of wish more games (such as Diablo III) had companion apps (I’d love a full screen map and inventory management using SmartGlass), but I’m sure there will be more amazing uses in the coming months. I strongly recommend checking out the Xbox One SmartGlass app if you haven’t had a chance to already.

Civilization Revolution 2: I can’t stop

IMG_0011_2

Civilization Revolution on the Xbox 360 was my very first exposure to the Civilization franchise. The very first time I played it I was addicted. There was just something amazing about trying to set up the perfect defenses to keep your Nation alive before venturing out and engaging in little skirmishes to raise the experience levels of your armies as you advance your technology and eventually make a play to rule the world.

Going from Civ Revolution to Civ V on the PC was quite the shock. Not only is it a lot slower paced, there’s a lot more to manage and keep track of. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but it’s not necessarily a quick fix type of game. At first I couldn’t get a grasp on Civ V as it was just too different (for example, being unable to stack troops makes it very difficult to navigate into tight spaces and launch an attack). Now I love Civ V just as much as I loved Civ Revolution, it’s just very time consuming.

Enter Civilization Revolution 2, the $14.99 iOS exclusive (for the moment). Having such an amazing game available at any time on my iPad is amazing, and it’s worth every penny, if not more. The game looks and plays almost exactly like the 2008 console release, with a few additions and improvements.

Playing a Civ game on a touch device is easy, and intuitive. Tap a troop and tap where you want it to go. Everything comes naturally, I don’t think I could ever go back to playing Civ Revolution with a controller. It also runs quite smoothly on the iPad Air and looks great all the time.

I’ve already sunk something around 10 hours into Civ Revolution 2, and I’ve loved every minute of it. The only problem I have is putting it down. Most people come to expect mobile games to be quick fix games, but mobile gaming has come a long way since Angry Birds. You now have full featured games on mobile devices as opposed to stripped down iterations. A few of my Civ Revolution 2 games have lasted three hours or longer and the time flew by before I realized it. I’ll tell myself ‘just one more turn’ and before long I’m 50 turns deeper.

Beware Civ Revolution 2’s addictive properties. Recently after finishing a 3 hour Civ Rev 2 game I immediately jumped onto my MacBook and began a Civ V game.

If you have an iOS device I highly recommend purchasing Civilization Revolution 2. You’ll get countless hours of enjoyment out of it if you enjoy strategy games or Civ games. If the PC versions of Civilization have intimidated you I also suggest you check out Civ Rev 2 as it’s much easier to get into and you’ll be having fun before you know it.

Civilization Revolution 2 is available in the App Store for $14.99

Another check in

Hey there. Still busy, sorry I haven’t been around lately. I haven’t played Elder Scrolls Online at all in the last week. I’m not sure if I’ll play much more of it. I played a bit of Trials Evolution on Xbox One and it’s pretty enjoyable. I like the atmosphere of it all, even if it is a bit distracting at times. The core gameplay is basically the same as the other Trials games (with the addition of trick mode) which is great, because the main draw is trying to beat your friends’ ghosts and top them on the leaderboard.

I hooked up my NES and played some Super Mario Bros. 3 after watching the Giant Bomb Encyclopedia Bombastica on Super Mario Bros. 2. I’ve never beaten Mario 3, in fact I’ve never made it past the first world. So I looked up how to find the first warp whistle and warped to world 4 but then the game froze. I have another copy of Mario 3 that’s in better condition so I’ll probably have to use that one if I want to try to make any serious progress. I suck at platforming games though. I always jump into pits repeatedly and just get angry and quit.

In other news, I have next week off as a break before the deployment so maybe I’ll get motivated to blog a few more times. Until then, thanks for stopping in.

Titanfall so far

Titanfall Gamefly

I was lucky enough to be able to get a copy of Titanfall from GameFly at release and so far it’s been quite enjoyable. I played about an hour of the Beta and two classic matches since its release (been busy this week) but it’s been fun. It feels to me like a sort of mix of Call of Duty and Halo which is refreshing. The gameplay is much more fast-paced than Call of Duty and I can’t say there’s much ”camping” to be found in Titanfall. It’s been pretty chaotic and thrilling and there hasn’t been a dull moment yet. Lately in Ghosts matches I can go for what seems like an eternity without seeing an enemy. In Titanfall there’s either a player enemy or an enemy bot at every corner so there’s always something to shoot at.

I haven’t played any of the campaign mode yet (not to be confused with a singleplayer mode) but I look forward to giving it a try this weekend. I’ll be sure to post some more impressions as I spend more time with the game.

South Park: The Stick of Truth, first impressions

Yesterday I picked up South Park: The Stick of Truth on Steam. I didn’t know a whole lot about the game, other than it had a lot of hype behind it, but I watched about 15 minutes of a Twitch stream the other night and knew I had to get my hands on the game. I would really enjoy playing it on the Xbox One, but unfortunately it’s only available on last gen consoles and PC.

I played about an hour of it last night and it was hilarious. The game feels exactly like an extended episode of South Park, thanks to it being written by the show’s writers, and the art style is dead on. It’s a blast to explore the world and find all of the little references to the show and the combat is enjoyable and hilarious as well.

I look forward to spending more time with the game.

Finally finished a game of Civilization V

IMG_3296

Last night I finially finished a game of Civilization V. A game that I started back in October. I had never played a game to completion, in fact I think this was the first and only game I ever started. Obviously I hadn’t put a lot of time in it, mainly because I couldn’t figure out how to win. The only Civ game I had ever played was Civilization Revolution on the 360 and I thought those matches were long, so when I wasn’t nearing victory after an hour investment I assumed I was doing something wrong. Three hundred and fifty (give or take) turns later and I finally achieved victory.

When I took the photo above I thought I was finally nearing victory, I had just overtaken Russia on the northern part of the continent and I moved my ‘massive’ army south to take on Songhai. I figured I’d rush in and burn their three cities to the ground and the game would be over. After the fires cooled I still had not won. “Was there something I’m missing? Do I have to take out the city-states too?” I pondered. Then I realized there were still three civilizations I hadn’t even encountered yet, somewhere out in the mist.

So I sent my troops to sea, at first to the east and couldn’t find anything. After an agonizingly long time of sending ships around the entire continent I found another continent to the west that held the Egyptians and Greeks along with an occupied India.

I started to send every unit in my country westward after forming an alliance with a city-state so I could start staging my troops on their land. I then stormed into Greece and started attacking two cities at once. I liberated Mumbai and returned it to Gandhi as I continued to exterminate the Greeks from existence. I allied with Egypt in order to use their land to surround Greece and burn it to the ground. Greece had fallen.

Now all that stood in my way was Egypt, and I wasted little time breaking my alliance with them (angering Gandhi) and storming across their borders. I at first concentrated all of my troops on their northernmost city and they put up the most difficult fight yet. They took out three or four of my units before I realized if I just took out their capital in the south I would win. I moved my cannons and rifleman south and engaged some of their troops with swordsman as I set up my siege troops. More units were lost, but it was inevitable, their capital would soon fall. I thought I would still have to face India since I handed Mumbai back over to them so I started setting up the rest of my troops on the edge of their border to make my final advance toward victory. Egypt soon fell and it turned out I was victorious. The long war ended sometime in the 1900’s. It was over.

Civilization V

I learned quite a bit during this game. When I first started out I would try to overpower cities rather than attack them strategically with archers and siege units while my ground troops stayed back. I’d lose entire armies trying to take a single city. I also thought in order to win I had to burn every city to the ground, not just the capitals. It’s probably easier to attack a civilization’s outer cities before going for the capital, but next time I don’t think I’ll go after every single one. I also ended up with way too many cities. I had at least 15, if not 20 or more since I annexed almost every city I came across (eventually I started razing them as my unhappiness grew).

I think I’m more prepared for the next game, though there’s still a lot I don’t know. For one, toward the end a few of my cities started starving and I couldn’t figure out why. Also, production was painfully slow in almost all of my cities (30 turns or more for a basic unit) and I still don’t know why that happened either. I still have a lot to learn, but I have to say I enjoyed completing my first game.

FCW Wrestling

I just wanted to share a video from a YouTuber whose videos I’ve enjoyed watching for awhile. YouTube user JD Venom has created a variety of Let’s Play videos and his most popular videos are his FCW wrestling videos. Basically he puts together his own wrestling shows in WWE 2k14, creates storylines, adds commentaries and edits it all into a wrestling “TV show” for his YouTube audience. I wish I had the time, patience and enthusiasm to do this sort of thing. I think it’d be cool to do something like this in Madden or something where you could tell your franchise / career story in a weekly highlight show or something.

Anyway, check out his most recent FCW video:

Gran Turismo 5: First Impressions

IMG_2643The last Gran Turismo game I played was Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 and at that point I remember being very burned out on Gran Turismo. Soon after I discovered Forza on the Xbox which was an incredible game. Forza 3 was even more mind-blowing and lastly Forza 4 became my favorite racing game of all time.

I decided to check out Gran Turismo 5 (XL edition) because it was cheap and I figured I’d see what it has to offer. So far I have to say I like Forza 4 much better and I can only assume Forza 5 will probably be my next gen racing game of choice.

IMG_2644

One of the things I’m not liking about Gran Turismo 5 is its overall presentation and menus. They seem very plain and yet overly cluttered at the same time. The bland jazzy and techno background music doesn’t add anything either, and even the in game race music is getting on my nerves.

IMG_2642 IMG_2641

I installed the game which claimed would make loading times faster, but they’re still painfully slow. I completed the B license test which consists of 10 individual tests and the time it took to get from one test to the next was painful. I’m not certain why the game doesn’t transition from test to test instead of making me click ‘next session’ and wait for what seems like an eternity to get into the next test. Furthermore I wish the license test barrier didn’t even exist.

IMG_2638

The racing is okay, but the cars don’t feel anything like they do in Forza. Nor do they sound as good. Also when I bump into cars it makes an awful sound and I bounce off as if we have barriers. I assume the damage setting isn’t turned on by default, but either way it’s quite an ugly experience.

IMG_2636

The tracks and environments are also quite ugly so far. They pale in comparison to the beauty and detail found in Forza 4.

In the end I’ll probably continue to play GT5 as I await Forza 5 and the Xbox One, but if you have a choice between GT5 and Forza 4, I would definitely choose Forza 4.

I was hoping to post a gameplay video, but I’m having issues uploading to YouTube right now. If it goes through I’ll add it later.

Grinkers Arcade in Eagle, Idaho / Arcade Outsiders Tournament

I was browsing for things to do in the Boise area this weekend and came across a post for the Arcade Outsiders Tournament at Grinkers Arcade this weekend. I hadn’t previously heard of Grinkers and only knew of the Spacebar retro arcade. I love retro arcades and am glad I discovered a new one in the area.

(Photo from the Grinkers webpage)

Vanessa and I headed over at around 4 this evening to check the arcade out. It’s a bit larger than the Spacebar and has more machines, but a similar feel. There’s a bar with food and drinks and a bunch of classic arcade machines and pinball machines. I had quite a bit of fun revisiting old games, some of which I’ve never played in their arcade forms. I played Off Road, one of my favorite games on the NES, which was quite fun. We also played Super Mario Bros (didn’t even know there was an arcade version of the game. Only made it to level 1-2 :/), Mario Bros. (also didn’t make it very far), Space Invaders (lasted about 2 minutes), Ms. Pac Man (didn’t clear the first stage), Mortal Kombat and a few pinball machines.

(Photo from the Grinkers webpage)

We didn’t stay long enough to really get a feel for the tournament action, but there were quite a few machines marked for tournament play and a handful of people playing those machines (much better than I could ever play).

Check out a few photos I took below. I also recorded a few videos which I’ll add to the post after they upload to YouTube.
